Geek Week: For Cosplay!
First, let me start by apologizing for the quality of the pictures, but I just couldn’t bring myself to bring my camera with me on this trip. All the photos this week will be from my phone. Also, this week’s posts are a collaboration with other Geeks & Beauties! If you didn’t read my Geek Week announcement post then you haven’t seen all of their wonderful links included from day 1 of the collab. Make sure you do that, and don’t miss their links at the bottom of this post! Now, let’s get down to it…
Why do I buy comics?
Like most things in my life these days this answer can be summed up in about two words. “For Cosplay!” Ok but seriously…I won’t deny that comics are a new thing in my life. I’ve always appreciated cartoons and movies based on comics, but I’m a true Disney Geek. I didn’t get into comics until I decided to cosplay Super Girl last year. I think it would be wrong to dress up as a character I didn’t know. Welcome to a newfound addiction and money drain for myself. So much so to the point that the guys in the local stores know that if I come in out of cosplay I’m looking for new, badass, female characters to potentially dress up as.
Here are a few reviews of some issues I picked up a while ago on one of those “cosplay idea seeking” trips. Don’t worry. No spoilers.
- Grimm Fairy Tales presents The Little Mermaid 3/5
Ok, I’ll admit, I really just love the art in Zenescope comics, and someday I do plan on cosplaying ALL EVERYTHING ARIEL, so how could I not get this? Definitely at some point will be getting the other four in this series. I loved it. I need to know the whole story. It was a fun new twist on a favorite. - Mrs. Deadpool and the Howling Commandos #1
I will admit. I haven’t read a Deadpool comic. SINS. The guys at Borderlands said this was a story following Mrs. Deadpool narrated by Deadpool’s ghost, and a must read. I have to say I agree. She’s a total badass. I really love her look, but I’m not sure if or when I will actually cosplay this. She’s an extremely sexy lady of the underworld. Maybe someday though. - Starfire #1
Ohhhh this one. She’s sexy, confident, and completely aloof. I love her. This costume was already on my radar, but after this? YES. Be sure to read this one. She’s so cute. You cannot resist her wonderful alien charm. - Lady Mechanica No. 0
I really love the idea of steampunk, but have no real idea how you break into that other than just doing it. This is much darker than most things I go for, but you gain an almost immediate sympathy and desire to know more of the main character’s story very quickly. I’ll have to get over my fear of Sclera lenses if I decide to ever do this character, but at least the issues are only $1 (so I can cover the cost of the lenses with my savings HA)!
Ok. Maybe these weren’t so much reviews as random thoughts, but I hope maybe you’ll go pick at least one of them up. They are all worth a read.
Any recommendations based on what I like above? Have you read any of these comics? Have you cosplayed any of these characters? Leave a comment below, and don’t forget to subscribe!
