Cinderella

I’m a bit behind schedule on my 15 in 2015, but Cinderella is number three! This cosplay was brought about by asking a few of my closest friends, “What Disney princess do I resemble most?” Most answered Cinderella, and I will tell you that I do plan on making the other answer as well in the near future. Here is the journey of how this costume came together. If you have any specific questions on the costume leave a comment below!c

I realized that I have a true connection with Cinderella. I have a huge love (obsession) for shoes. Not only am I in love with them, but I constantly find myself walking out of them. Truth. I’m a sucker for a classic fairytale, and in my opinion, it doesn’t get more classic than this. She also is a huge inspiration because, “There’s one thing. They can’t order me to stop dreaming.”

It was no question that I was going to do the original Disney version of Cinderella’s ballgown. There are few dresses that can live up to the statement she made when she walked into the palace. Something that has and always will be a pet peeve to me is that Disney has revamped her in a blue dress. THE DRESS IS SILVER. This was a detail that I definitely wasn’t leaving out of my design. Twice as much fabric, but half the work went into this dress because making Snow White before this meant I didn’t have to learn how to sew a gown.

Cinderella is nothing without her accessories. While many cosplayers cover their ears and attach large rhinestones to a silver headband, I always imagined the big rhinestones as her earrings. I had a silver headband, and I used hair barrettes found at Charming Charlie’s to make clip-ons for her earrings. The choker was a black, stretch lace with rhinestones on it and velcro attached to the back. I styled the wig myself. This is the video tutorial I followed (I may do my own video sometime as styling the wig was very different from styling real hair). Last, but certainly not least, SHOES! It broke my heart to  modify these shoes as I found my favorite designer for $6 at Goodwill for these shoes, but in the end it was worth it. Silver paint, a ton of glitter, and 300+ rhinestones later I had created my own glass slippers.

I must say, staying in character was the easiest it has ever been with Cinderella. Superheroes are totally badass; I am certainly planning many more of them, but that little girl inside me who always wanted to be a princess growing up found her moment to shine. South Carolina Comicon was the perfect debut for this outfit, and I’m so happy that I was able to make so many children, young and old, smile.

You look beautiful! I want to revamp my own Cinderella dress (I’m on Team Silver Dress as well). Did you use a pattern?

I used two patterns, actually. I’m not skilled enough yet to make my own patterns. And thank you for the compliment. I’ve got plenty more on the way. I’m excited.

I used this pattern for the main bodice and skirt. I cut the sleeves down a bit so they were not as big as the ones in the picture:

I used this for the drapes. I believe i cut 4-6 inches off of the drapes before attaching them to the bodice:
